The Concern
You Only Get One Chance to Finish a New Home Correctly
Homeowners building new almost always ask the same thing: how do I know the work will be done right? It's a fair question. Drywall goes in near the end of the build, when the budget is tight and the schedule is compressed, and it's the one trade whose work you look at in every room for the life of the house.
Rushed hanging and thin finishing show up later as visible butt joints, wavy walls, nail pops and cracked corners. On a new home you've invested serious money in, that's the difference between a house that looks custom and one that looks close.
Why It Matters
Drywall Becomes Highly Visible Once the Home Is Finished
Modern homes make finishing harder, not easier. Big windows throw raking light across long walls. Open plans remove the corners that used to break up sight lines. Vaulted ceilings and tall entries put large uninterrupted planes right where everyone looks. Add satin paint and LED lighting, and the surface has nowhere to hide.
Getting that right is a matter of proper board layout, framing corrections before board goes up, correct joint treatment, and enough coats — worked wide enough — to keep the plane flat.
Our Approach
How H&K Handles a New Home
Walk the build first
We look at framing, ceiling heights, window placement and lighting before quoting, so the estimate reflects the house you're actually building.
Correct problems before board
Framing that's out of plane gets addressed before drywall goes on, not floated over afterward.
Plan the layout
Board layout and joint placement are planned to minimize visible seams on long walls and ceilings.
Finish to the lighting
Finish level is matched to how each room will be lit and painted.
Communicate through the build
You and your builder know where we are and what's next.

Questions
New Construction Drywall FAQs
- When should drywall be scheduled on a new home build?
- After framing, mechanical rough-ins and insulation are complete and inspected, and once the building is closed in and can be held at a stable temperature. Contact us well before that point so the work can be planned into your build schedule.
- Do you hang drywall as well as finish it?
- Yes. We can take a new home from bare framing through final finish, or come in behind another crew's hang. If we're finishing someone else's hang, we look at it first and tell you honestly what the finished result will look like.
- What finish level does a custom home need?
- It depends on lighting and paint. Rooms with large windows, long uninterrupted walls or satin and semi-gloss paint benefit from a higher finish level. We'll recommend where the extra work makes a visible difference and where it doesn't.
- Do you work directly with homeowners or only through builders?
- Both. Many projects come through custom home builders and general contractors, and many come directly from homeowners managing their own build.
